El Oro is located in the south of Ecuador, on the Pacific coast. Its capital Machala is considered by the locals to be the world capital of banana because of its long history of banana production. Agriculture on the coast mostly consists of banana plantations and shrimp farms. Bananas also grow in the highland mixed with other crops like cacao or citrus.
